Today I’m not asking you to do anything. Except think.
Word in the blabbersphere now is that the plethora of petitions going around post-election will have little impact, because they are too numerous and too clamorous. I have no idea what to think about this and continue signing and circulating. After all, they are not going all to the same recipients.
However, there are of course other ways to resist. Here are some ideas, in ascending order of seriousness, to help us all branch out,:
- Quoth the Dalai Lama (# XIV):
“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
- The municipality of San Francisco reaffirms values of inclusiveness and justice post-election, or as this media outlet has it, “issues-official-resolution-middle-finger-trump.”
- Timothy Snyder, historian at Yale specializing in Central and Eastern Europe and the Shoah (and, it must follow as the night the day, a leading authority on how fascist/authoritarian strongmen rise to power), as well as the author of Bloodlands and Black Earth, has guidelines on saving the United States from tyranny. We’ve all been doing some of these things for ages.
So now, time to do them harder.
Time to do more of them.
PS Wait, there’s more! This just in, and yes, it’s a petition. But a really, really good one that can’t wait.
Ask Twitter to ban Trump. His hateful tweets are in violation of Twitter rules.
Twitter has gone on record saying they/it might consider it.
