Alert #14: The Electoral College Again

(You did not miss Alert #13. I went straight from 12 to 14; the times are making me superstitious.)

Okay, so unless you’ve been living on Pluto, which is not even a planet any more, you know that the Electoral College is convening next Monday, 19 December, and it’s not over until it’s over. You know as well that the odds that the Electors will choose anyone other than the Grabber are very, very slim indeed.

But there are nonetheless a few significant reasons to keep on fighting this good fight.

Writes Adam Green of Progressive Change Campaign Committee [italics mine-LEW]:

We go into this with sober expectations. Barring an extraordinary event [he wrote this before the latest revelations about Russian hacking-LEW], the Electoral College will likely elect Donald Trump as president. However, we can achieve two concrete things with these protests even if Trump wins the vote.

First, by generating media attention for the idea that electors should support the popular vote winner, we can make it a source of mockery when Trump claims a “mandate” for an authoritarian, anti-worker, right-wing agenda. And when establishment Republicans in Congress claim a “mandate” to ram trillions of dollars of corporate giveaways through Congress.

Second, these events will force the media to report that Trump’s razor-thin victories in battleground states were made possible in part by massive voter suppression. 2016 was the first general election without the full protection of the Voting Rights Act. Over 800 polling places were closed. Early voting was cut. Restrictive voter ID laws were in effect. Hundreds of thousands of voters — disproportionately people of color — were purged from the voter rolls.”

Laura Esther again:

Here is the Letter to the Electors that is being published as a full-page ad in newspapers across the country today and tomorrow. Read it and be inspired:

Actions:
Call Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and ask him to provide intelligence briefings to the Electors. Over 50 Electors have signed a letter stating that they ‘require’ an intelligence briefing before they vote next Monday.

Here is Clapper’s phone number:
703 733-8600.

If you don’t have time for a chat with Clapper, then sign this petition:

and this one calling for the electoral college vote and inauguration to be postponed pending an investigation (what hutzpah! I love it! LEW):

Thank you, Jill.

I was just discussing petitions with a dear friend who said that, like me, she’s heard many people say there are too many of them, etc.
“But,” she said, “What is the alternative?”
And we agreed that the secret, magical potency of your name does not diminish each time you sign it, just as having your picture taken does not steal a piece of your soul away.

And finally,

Get on the horn!
(1) Contact your US Reps, Senators, & Governors & ask that they demand that electors be briefed on the CIA information on Russian interference; and/or demand that 19 December Electoral College meeting be postponed long enough for electors to review the CIA info. If you gave money to any congresspeople/senators/governors outside of your district, call them too and identify yourself as a donor.

(2) Contact the U.S. Attorney General and ask that the Electoral College vote be postponed until a full investigation of Russian interference and the Trump campaign’s potential coordination with Russia is complete. You can reach the Attorney General’s office at 202-514-2000. PRESS 4 to get the Comment Line.

Thank you, Trish.

I think that’s all. Let’s all get to work!
